Children’s Messages to Parents

  • TEACH ME HOW YOUR FAMILY WORKS. I come from a different environment, and once I know how your family works, I will feel safer.
  • BE PATIENT WITH MY BEHAVIOR. Everything is new to me; I need to learn how to react in different situations.
  • DON’T BE SHY TO EXPRESS YOUR EMOTIONS IN FRONT OF ME. I need to learn to understand the feelings of others and also my own feelings.
  • DON’T PITTY ME AND DON’T SPOIL ME. I know I cannot get everything I ask for I’m just trying to find my boundaries.
  • STILL, BE TOLERANT TO SOME OF MY NEEDS – Although you might find me too grown for some of my wishes, I need to enjoy what I missed in my early childhood.
  • TEACH ME TO SHARE A SAFE PHYSICAL CONTACT IN YOUR ARMS.
  • DON’T BE AFRAID TO GIVE ME CLEAR BUT LOVING BOUNDARIES. I prefer it – it makes me feel safe.
  • BE CONSISTENT. Inconsistency confuses me.
  • DON’T GIVE ME RUSHED PROMISES. Remember that I would feel cheated if you didn’t follow up on them.
  • DON’T ALLOW ME TO KEEP OLD BAD HABITS. I have to rely on you to detect them in time. With increasing age, correcting them becomes harder.
  • TEACH ME THAT I CAN ASK FOR HELP AND THAT I CAN FINALLY RELLY ON SOMEONE.
  • DON’T FORGET THAT SOMETIMES I AM NOT GOOD AT EXPRESSING MYSELF. Therefore, sometimes I am not accurate and it’s not easy to understand me.
  • DISCOVER MY POTENTIAL AND HELP ME TO DEVELOP IT. It will help me gain more confidence.
  • TRY NOT TO BE IRONIC AND DO NOT MOCK ME. I don’t understand irony; I take everything very seriously and personally.
  • DON’T LET ME TO FEEL ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ME AND YOUR BIOLOGICAL CHILDREN.
  • TALK TO ME ABOUT HOW I CAME TO YOUR FAMILY. I don’t feel safe when you keep it secret from me.
  • BE INQUISITIVE ABOUT MY LIFE BEFORE YOUR FAMILY. One day I will need your help to understand my past and to lean my personal history.
  • WHEN I SAY I DON’T LIKE YOU, TAKE IT WITH A PINCH OF SALT. Because it’s not you whom I don’t like.
  • GRADUALLY, DON’T PROTECT ME IN PROGRESS FROM ALL THE CONSEQUENCES OF MY ACTION. I need to learn how to lose; I need to learn about trouble and pain. Life is not a walk in the park and I want to be ready for everything that comes next.
  • DON’T TELL ME THAT YOU DO NOT LIKE ME, although sometimes I do incomprehensible things.
  • DON’T TELL ME MY WORRIES AND FEARS ARE SILLY. They are real to me and it means a lot to me if you try to understand me.
  • WHEN YOU FIND THAT YOU FAILED ME ON SOMETHING NEVER FEEL TOO PROUD TO APOLOGISE. You are my role model, I learn from you, and a sincere apology will only improve our relationship.
  • DON’T TRY TO CONVINCE ME THAT YOU ARE PERFECT. It will bother me if I find out that is not the case.
  • DON’T FORGET I AM GROWING UP FAST. It’s hard to keep up with me, but please try.
  • DON’T FORGET THAT I CANNOT GROW UP PROPERLY WITHOUT LOVE. But I don’t need to tell you that.
